Study of shoulder injuries in wheelchair tennis. Systematic review

Abstract

In the scientific literature, there are documents related to shoulder injuries in Wheelchair Tennis players. Therefore, the aim of this study is to carry out a systematic review related to shoulder injuries in Wheelchair Tennis athletes, to know the importance of preventing and avoiding injuries in the upper limbs. For this, the search procedure was carried out in four databases: Web of Science, SportDiscus, PubMed and Scopus, selecting the manuscripts published up to July 2022. The key terms used to search for documents were: "Wheelchair tennis", "Injury" and "Shoulder". Also, criteria for inclusion and exclusion of documents were established, to select specific manuscripts related to shoulder injuries in Wheelchair Tennis players. The selected documents were classified based on different variables: General variables, Specific variables of the paper, Variables related to the subject of studies and Quality variables of the papers. The results show the existence of little scientific literature related to the subject matter under study. In addition, the studies generally analyze shoulder injuries in Wheelchair Tennis athletes. Therefore, it is essential to increase research related to the subject and focused on the biomechanical and kinematic analysis of the upper limbs, as well as on knowledge about the training and recovery programs used to prevent and avoid injuries in athletes. Finally, this review serves as a basis for future research on Wheelchair Tennis and its application in sports performance, since it has allowed knowing the main findings related to the influence of sports injuries in this adapted modality.
